10 Signs of unhealthy skin

Skin can tell others quite a lot about you. Beautiful, radiant and healthy skin denotes vitality and a person care for themselves. Unfortunately, if your skin’s appearance is dull, the conclusion the viewer will infer will probably not be favorable. Unhealthy skin can give the impression of poor hygiene, an unhealthy lifestyle and apathy. identifying the signs of poor skin heath and taking the necessary steps to treat the problem can make a big difference in the way others see you. Below are the signs that indicate poor skin health : 

  • Blotchiness and uneven texture

Tips for healthy skin

The health of you skin is directly related to your overall health, the skin is the largest organ of the body, in order for the skin to be healthy, proper nutrition is necessary. This means that intake of both water and food needs to be adequate in amount and nutritionally sound

Drink enough water

Water transports nutrients, helps eliminate toxins, and modulates body temperature. The superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis, is able to hold a great deal of water, therefore making it elastic enough to help maintain the bod’s fluid and electrolyte balance. If you’re continually dehydrated, your skin is depleted of its water content and starts to show signs of dryness and cracking. I suggest drinking at least sixty-four ounces of water per day, either hot, lukewarm, or at room temperature. You may drink filtered water or mineral water. Either buy water flavored, or use a wedge of lemon or lime or cucumber to make it more flavorful. 

Eat wisely

The age-old recommendation of following a diet that emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat, fish, and poultry is particularly important for persons with skin problems. According to chines medicine, there are a number of skin conditions such as eczema and acne that can be caused by an improper diet. This means the diet that you have is not suitable for your constitution. In Chinese medicine, a food is characterized by its energetic property. If you tend  to have a hot condition, that is, feel persistently hot  and have red rashes that worsen during the warmer months or in warmer climates, you should eat foods that are cooling in property. These include watermelon, grapes, cucumber, pers, mung beans, and soy products (if you’re not sensitive). Additionally, reduce or eliminate your coffee intake because coffee is warming. Instead, drink water or beverages that are cooling, such as peppermint or chamomile tea.

Many foods and families of food are known to trigger skin reactions. These reactions range from classic allergy symptoms whereby the immune System responds to an individual sensitivity. The table below lists foods that cause reactions; note their substitutions. If you’re unable to identify your trigger food(s) either on your own or through a food journal (see below), you can try going on an élimination diet. This involves eating only lean méat and vegetables, preferably organically grown and naturally raised, for two weeks. Then add foods one at a rime to see if they cause symptoms.

If you’re having difficulty assessing and modifying your diet, it may be useful to keep a food journal. For two weeks, everything you eat is logged. Keeping a food journal créâtes aware- ness for what you’re eating. In addition record any skin changes. You may be surprised by the amount of junk food you Ve indulging in, especially between meals. A food journal can also help identify which foods are causing or contributing to your skin problem. Culprits include alcohol, sweets, shellfish, fried

foods, and spicy foods, particularly those seasoned with chili peppers. Dairy products (such as milk and cheese), foods that con- tain gluten, especially wheat, as well as yeast-containing foods, such as bread and pastries, are also known to cause skin problems.

If you’re unable to identify trigger foods, try eating a diet of lean protein, vegetables, and rice and millet for two weeks to see how your skin responds. Gloria, one of our clients, experienced remarkable improvement in both her psoriasis and her digestive System with herbs and this diet. Denise, an eczema patient, successfully identified wheat as the food that was exacerbating her symptoms. She was on this diet for two weeks, and when she added wheat, her rash quickly worsened. She made a choice to not eat wheat after realizing the effect on her skin.

Clear your liver

Our liver couverts everything we eat and drink into nutrients for our muscles, hormones, blood, and immune System. The liver stores vitamins, minerais, and sugars, and produces bile, which rids the liver of waste products, and helps break down and absorb fats in the small intestine. The liver, in addition to the kidneys, clears the body of harmful substances. These substances include Chemicals, alcohol and drugs, toxins produced by bacteria and fungus, and waste created by the breakdown of protein. If you’re overweight, hâve a history of hepatitis, or hâve used alcohol, pharmaceutical, or recreational drugs, or hâve been on steroids, estrogen, or oral contraceptives, or hâve been exposed to pesticides, cleaning solvents and other Chemicals, you hâve an extra reason to detoxify your liver. Detoxification can be accomplished by eating fresh fruits and vegetables as often as possible, exercising regularly, eliminating or minimizing your use of alcohol, avoid- ing recreational drugs, and reducing or avoiding exposure to harmful Chemicals such as household pesticides. Sweating is also a good way to detoxify your System. This can be done in a bath. (See “Try Healing Baths” section, later on in this chapter.)
